„Faszination Bikebergsteigen“

Hey there, excellent article. I didn’t listen to every interview or audio, so I might be wrong or miss something. but: the current „Vertriders“ totally ignore the founders of the Vertriders. fact is: the first, original Vertrider Team (Axel and Sylvia didn’t even know what Vertriding is at this time) were Paul, Picco, Christopher Malin and George, Willi, Mathias Roessler. Christopher made Vertriding public, founded the first Team, did all the media and filmwork, organized their bike and material needs, always hauled his bike all the way up with his heavy camera gear.
If I recall it right, he produced five Vertrider films minimum, invented the legendary VertDays and Vertrider Big Mountain Weeks. Long before Hannes even knew what Vertriding is. Years later, George, Pico, Paul and Chris had built the Nordpark Singletrail. By then, Chris invited Benedict, Axel, Sylvia and later Gerhard. This was the Liteville Vertrider Team. He got them all the sponsoring. When a serious ear illness grounded Christopher from biking for several years, his former team, he had put so much effort and love in, essentially freezed him out. they actually didn’t care a fucking dime. this was tough.
Just ask Chris, I know him from some productions in the golden age of freeriding in Switzerland with the legendary Rocky Mountain Froriders, and since then have followed Chris‘ works. By the way Chris brought Pico in as the European Frorider! Chris as well kind of brought Harald to Innsbruck and helped many local riders to get where they are today. He’s a really humble guy and since his inner ear condition has improved two years ago, is riding again like hell.
So, honestly: talking about today’s Vertriding is not complete as long as you ignore the original heroes that did so many extreme rides and first descents way way before everyone else. Pico, Paul, George, Chris, they did the most extreme rides with 40 pound Bikes. Chris told me once they hiked up 4 hours, just to find themselves fighting their way down on a ultra technical trail for another 5 hours. I am out of the Bike biz since some years but I remember those epics, what these guys did was super impressing – and all this without Social Media as we know it today.
    Cheers
    Steven

      Hi Steven,
thx for reading/watching our Bikebergsteigen report and of course for your long and interesting comment, that goes far beyond. As you said the vertride-pioneers already did rather impressing footage (from rather impressing riding); for our readers I found for example this „The Original Vertriders – Montafon Vertdays“ . But for you as an explanation our Interviewpartners did not ignore „their origins“ and it is mentioned in our report as well, because they mentioned it.
And of course you’re right, we didn’t put emphasis on the history that much, but this was neither our intention nor needed in detail for our story here. Despite your out of bike business I hope you’re still on the trails and have fun?
      Cheers
      Claudia

  • Super
